Proposal – Phase One

The proposed Phase 1 light rail was conceived on the basis of existing right-of-ways, including the South End CN corridor, the former rail alignment into the north of downtown, and the electricity corridor in Clayton Park. It comprises a single bidirectional line that interchanges with itself at Dutch Village. Unlike the VIA Rail proposal, our proposal connects housing districts to all of downtown, five universities, the NSCC Institute of Technology, HMC Dockyard, the Halifax Shipyard, CFB Stadacona, and major upcoming development nodes identified in the Centre Plan including the Cogswell Interchange, Mumford, and the glut of vacant land near the Joseph Howe Superstore. Integrated bus-rail interchanges can be provided at existing major terminals including Lacewood, Mumford, Cobequid, and the Scotia Square Terminal (to be rebuilt under the Cogswell Interchange Lands Plan). This would allow certain bus routes to act as feeder services, shuttling residents from their homes to the LRT and allowing commuters to bypass traffic.

Potential future extensions

Phase One forms a basis for potential future extensions on existing right-of-ways, or through a cross-harbour tunnel to Dartmouth serving the Shannon Park redevelopment and the Highway 111 corridor. In the future, the network could be expanded to serve Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea, Spryfield, Middle Sackville, or the airport.
